perfect elegance : architecture : kaufmann house : palm springs : richard neutra

for me this is one of the most beautiful houses in the world. this house that opens right up to keep cool from the high temperatures or closes to protect from the sand storms of palm springs was designed by richard neutra in 1946 for edgar j. kaufmann sr. one of neutra’s last buildings and his most famous is a perfect example of what was going on in california and the case study houses of that time. this was kaufmann’s summer home after he had falling water built by frank lloyd wright. yet it was only lived in for 7 years. after his death it laid empty for many years, then passed to barry manilow and a couple of others. brent harris bought it in 1992, took off the flowery wallpaper and changed it back to its original beauty. it recently sold for more than 12 million dollars.
